About the Department

On establishment of Tabriz Medicine faculty in 1947, the first class on gynecology and obstetrics was held in this faculty in 1951. Nine years later, the department of gynecology and obstetrics was transferred to its present site in Al-Zahra Hospital and began its educational activities in 1959 when Dr. Ali Nourhashemi, renowned professor, joined to the academic staff of this department. The first course of residency of gynecology and obstetrics was held in this department in 1960. Following the University’s policy, in 1995 Taleghani Hospital also started carrying on its activities as a training field of gynecology and obstetrics and since ever, the students of both general medicine and residents of gynecology and obstetrics have been taught in this hospital. At present, 8-10 gynecology and obstetrics specialist annually graduate from this center.

Besides training the residents of gynecology and obstetrics, the department has the responsibility of teaching the field of gynecology and obstetrics to a large number of medicine students in their general course. This department is also in cooperation with the faculty of Nursing and Midwifery in teaching the students of Associate degree, B.Sc., and especially M.Sc. programs. This department enjoys 18 academic staffs; of these 2 are full professors, 12 associated professors, and 4 assistant professors.

Department of gynecology and obstetrics presently solely houses in subspecialty center of Al-Zahra and general hospital of Taleghani. Moreover, it possesses a research center for the healthy fertility of women, which is sited in Al-Zahra teaching center. The Department has four subspecialized divisions consisting of infertility, women oncology, Fetal-Maternal Medicine and Urogynecology.

3.       Theoretical and practical classes for interns, externs, and residents of gynecology and obstetrics, and infertility fellowship
