About the Department
Department of Medical Bacteriology and Virology (also known as Medical Microbiology) is one of the active components of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. The department founded primarily as Department of Hygiene in 1953 (1332 S.H.) and then from 1998 (1377 S.H.) onwards as Department of Pathobiology, has ever since enjoyed sustained growth and developed reputation.
The cardinal goal of this department is to train various graduate, postgraduate and doctorate level students through excellence in teaching, research and service through associated hospitals. Faculty members teaches different areas of Bacteriology and Virology to students in affiliated schools of this university such as of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nutrition and other Paramedical Sciences in accordance with the lesson plans set by the Ministry, apart from being demanded in their own research activities. The department also offers MSc. and Ph.D. degrees in Medical Microbiology, Medical Virology and Medical Bacteriology, respectively. The educational programme is a broad understanding of various microorganisms, diagnosis of infectious diseases from basic and molecular biology prospective. Lecture and practical is the core of teaching in their curricula. Computerized instructional modules and problem based learning incorporated specially in practical sessions is a step forward active learning. Faculty members recruited in hospitals are immense source of assistance in the diagnosis of infectious diseases. The department also offers a range of general and/ or specialized training through its laboratories in various related hospitals to paramedical staff for the acquisition of management skills required in running clinical microbiological laboratory. Since last years [2009; 1388 S.H.] the department is also aiding Aras, the International Campus of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, which is a bridge to educational and professional opportunities and to a new way of looking at the world, through its dynamic and out- standing faculty members to develop well organized skill at graduate and postgraduate level.
